Darryl Van der Kley

Builder/DirectorDarryl Van der Kley

Darryl has 12 years’ experience in the building industry with extensive experience in renovations, spec homes and new high-end homes from framing to fit-out. He has worked in site supervisor roles, run a carpentry business and worked in earthmoving.

Darryl was born and raised in Toowoomba. When not renovating Darryl, his partner Jessica and their three kids enjoy boating at the Sunshine Coast.

Sam Van der Kley

Supervisor/Director Sam VDK

Sam has 11 years’ experience in the building industry, 7 of those years he spent as a carpenter in commercial building. During this time he learnt a lot about commercial finishings and site management. He has also spent a number of years in civil construction and earthmoving.

As the supervisor Sam manages trades and ensuring quality finishes for each of our clients.

Shaun Spies

Project Manager

Shaun

Shaun has over 22 years’ experience in the building and construction industry. Throughout his career he has worked in many facets of the building industry including general carpentry, concreting, plastering and tiling. As the Project Manager for Smith & Sons Toowoomba East, Shaun manages the projects and works closely with the onsite team and subcontractors to ensure each renovation runs smooth- from start to finish.

Jessica Van der Kley

Smith & Sons Toowoomba East is Jess’ first true venture in the building industry, although she has lived and worked with Darryl since he finished his apprenticeship 12 years ago. Jess comes from a financial services background, with experience in business and accounts management. Her day-to-day role is to take care of the accounts and bookkeeping.

Kristy Crocker

Kristy is a mother of three delightful children, and is currently working with us in a supporting role on a casual basis, taking care of data entry and accounts management.

 

 

 

 

John (Westman) Corbould

Carpentry TradesmanJohnny

Johnny has been working in the building and construction industry for over 9 years. He started his Carpentry Apprenticeship in 2008, continuing on as a tradesman after its completion.  Johnny has specialised in new timber frame homes prior to working with the Smith & Sons team, and has since enjoyed the more challenging aspect of renovations and extensions to existing homes.

His role includes working onsite in all aspects of carpentry and ensuring there is  nothing but quality workmanship on all of our projects. Johnny also supervises and is a mentor for our apprentice.

He appreciates the skill set acquired from the building industry, which has been very practical and useful for him outside of the workplace. Johnny is an integral part of our team and he contributes every day to the easy going and professional culture we have developed.


Chris Hansford

Apprentice Carpenter Chris

Chris started out in the building industry as a plumbing apprentice in 2008, completing his time and starting work as a tradesman in 2011.  After working several years as a plumber, Chris became interested in carpentry and started a Carpentry Apprenticeship with Smith & Sons Toowoomba East in 2016. Chris is a valuable member of our team, bringing both prior experience of the industry and plumbing trade, as well as a thirst for new skills and knowledge of carpentry.

He works on site, under our qualified carpenters supervision as well as completing the theory portion of his apprenticeship.

Chris enjoys the variety of our renovation work and being able to regularly experience new techniques.

Jacob Hawksworth

Jacob has been working in the building and construction industry for the past six years. He spent five of those years working in Emerald on new homes and renovations.

As a carpenter with Smith & Sons Toowoomba East, Jacob works onsite carrying out all aspects of carpentry and building.

Steven Hughes

Carpentry TradesmanSteven

Steven has 8 years’ experience in the building and construction industry. He started out building new homes for one of Toowoomba’s top new home builders, from there he went on to working in commercial construction. When the opportunity came up to work for Smith & Sons he jumped at the chance to gain experience in quality extensions and renovations.

Steven’s role includes working onsite in all aspects of carpentry to achieve the best possible results for the client.

Kyle Baldwin

Apprentice CarpenterKyle

Kyle has spent the last 10 years working in the drilling industry on a two weeks on and two weeks off roster. After spending two years working part time for a local builder, he decided to pursue a career in the building industry to be closer to home.

His role as an apprentice carpenter involves assisting the on site team under the supervision of our qualified carpenters. Kyle gains important skills through on site experience and the theory portion of his apprenticeship.
